Counseling Techniques

The counselors of Sequence are trained in a number of theoretical perspectives, many of which inform the ways they view a given situation or a set of symptoms. Your counselor will be happy to discuss these perspectives with you. At SEQUENCE, the most commonly applied techniques include:

Psychodynamic – This technique involves connecting past relationships and life events with similar, reoccurring issues in the present. By tracing the roots of certain roles, responses and behaviors – a deeper level of self-awareness leading to healthier, happier behaviors will emerge.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) – Patterns of thoughts become routine and may lead to unproductive and even destructive behaviors and feelings. The connection between your thoughts and your behaviors is analyzed, and new methods for thinking about your circumstances are outlined and practiced. This method of therapy is strongly augmented with the practice of mindfulness techniques designed to develop strategies for self-calming and management of personal emotions – all of which clear the way for more productive coping strategies.

Strength-Based – Individuals seeking counseling are often focused only on what has been going wrong. Through the strengths-based techniques, the focus is shifted to what’s going right, what strengths and abilities , (couple or family) possess that they can build upon to develop their own unique and successful coping strategies.

Relationship Focused- Humans exist in relationships to others. The ones from our past that shaped us, ones we are struggling with or hope to strengthen, or the relationships which are still ahead for us. The therapists of Sequence are all trained at the Level 1 of the Gottman Institutes Couples Therapy program, with those who predominately see couples trained through Level 3. Several of our Staff are certified in and offer the Prepare/Enrich program for couples. Other areas of expertise include family systems expertise, domestic and interpersonal trauma, divorce coaching, parenting dynamics, sibling relationship, workplace dynamics, and team building. Our goal is to help you develop and sustain constructive and nourishing relationships.

Mindfulness for Stress Reduction and Wellness - Offered in individual sessions or incorporated into group therapy, the goal is to learn and practice mindfulness, and to then develop insight and the habit of using these methods through the moments of your daily life. This service is offered to enhance the treatment provided to clients receiving on-going therapy. Current research strongly supports mindfulness as a remarkably effective and non-invasive technique to develop the ability to regulate our own emotional state and build emotional strength and resilience.

Expressive Arts and Other Methods- Several of the therapists at Sequence are trained in offering non-traditional methods for helping individuals express themselves, develop self-awareness and practice emotional regulation techniques. These may range from poetry writing, journaling, music, or drawing and painting. In some instances, a therapist may "prescribe" a book, article or video to check out and discuss. At this time some member of the team offer "Sand Tray" therapy, which allows for a tactile method to integrate verbal and non-verbal expressions of self-narratives. Our Silver Spring location offers a dedicated art room with supplies and space for individual and group therapy services.

EMDR and techniques used for trauma work - some of our provider have training in working with complex trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. While all therapists are trained to support individuals who have experienced trauma, special techniques have been found helpful in cases where the trauma is not able to be healed and moved on from in a reasonable amount of time.
