Child & Adolescent Counseling

Sequence offers a variety of services tailored to the needs of children and adolescents. Our highly trained therapists can help children and their parents understand multiple aspects of dysregulation including school and learning anxiety, emotional regulation, disordered eating, and LGBTQ issues.

Each office location has hands-on materials for children and youth to experience expressive and experiential forms of therapy.  Providers may incorporate these aspects as well with access to toys, art supplies, sand tray and more. These techniques allow for non-verbal processing of emotional states and the opportunity to learn interpersonal skills, self-expression and emotional regulation in a deeper and more meaningful way.

Children may, with parental permission and only in the service of the work, go outside for a session on a pleasant day. In Rockville, this may mean sitting outside under a tree. In Silver Spring, this may mean a visit to the garden or nearby playground for our younger clients, or a walk for a soda from a nearby cafe. Our goal is to create comfortable circumstances to promote reflection and play and conversation.

Counseling Techniques

The counselors of SEQUENCE are trained in a number of theoretical perspectives, many of which inform the ways they view a given situation or a set of symptoms. Your counselor will be happy to discuss these perspectives with you. At SEQUENCE, the most commonly applied techniques include psychodynamic, art therapy, play therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and mindfulness.  We are also trained to consider and work within a family systems model, including the family in the work with minors in a number of ways.
